Abstract

The purpose of the research paper is to study the history of the establishment, development, legal status, household, and socio-cultural activities of the Kyiv St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery in the Synodal period, its place and role in the social and spiritual life of the city of Kyiv and the region.

The scientific novelty. The issues of management organization, the quantitative and social composition of the Monastery’s inhabitants, its financial situation, the peculiarities of its household, social and charitable, and spiritual and educational activities from the second half of the 19th till early 20th century are comprehensively studied.

Conclusions. Kyiv St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Kyiv, which has experienced various periods throughout its centuries-old history. During the period under study, the Kyiv St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery was rated as the first-class monastery where inmates lived in separate cells, and it was under eparchial administration. Its hegumens were appointed by the Metropolitan of Kyiv and Halychyna (Galicia) with subsequent approval by the Holy Synod. The Monastery was the seat of the Kyiv vicar bishop and had the Theophany male skete under its jurisdiction.

By the end of the Synodal period, the Kyiv St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery had formed a powerful architectural and household complex. The Monastery maintained a relatively stable economic situation, leveraging multiple revenue sources concurrently. The state treasury’s financial assistance increased, resulting in the Monastery becoming a large landowner actively engaged in agricultural activities.

Permanent revenue sources gave the Monastery the opportunity to establish and maintain educational institutions of various types, an almshouse, a hospital, and engage in charitable activities, which became particularly active during World War I.
