Polish Historical and Geographical Studies at Reception of Journal ‘Kwartalnik Historyczny’ Authors (end of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century)
Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to find out the peculiarities of the process of reflection of Historical Geography formation as a discipline on the pages of the journal ‘Kwartalnik Historyczny’ from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century.
The scientific novelty of the study is in the fact that, based on historiographical materials (researches, reviews, and discussions), an analysis of historical and geographical issues under discussion, presented in Polish science on the pages of the journal ‘Kwartalnik Historyczny’ at the end of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century, is carried out for the first time.
Conclusions. On the pages of the journal ‘Kwartalnik Historyczny’ from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, the issues of Historical Geography were actively discussed, mainly in the context of the problems of this historical discipline formation. The main issues which the authors of the journal focused on were the discussion of the purposes of historical and geographical studies, the methods of their conducting, and defining the place of Historical Geography in the system of historical science. We see a very wide range of interests of the authors of the journal – from the discussion of the theoretical foundations of the new historical discipline to the evaluation of popular scientific publications containing information on Historical Geography. A notable feature of the critical reviews published on the pages of the journal ‘Kwartalnik Historyczny’ was the focus on high scientific standards of historiography and familiarization of readers with current European scientific studies, which also did not interfere with discussing issues of Historical Geography in the context of current political problems of partitioned Poland.
